10+ Years of the great game of Bench Sumo!
· Winter already!!!! Time to put away the short, pack up the hammock & get on your winter mawashi! While you are at it, why not get your Bench Sumo entry in on time!!! Enter your initial pick before each & every shonichi 6 times a year at www.benchsumo.net. J
· Hey, K-jo! Did you see the above?
· The Kyushu ’10 basho marks the 41st ICF contest
· This will be Bench Sumo’s 68th basho!
o 68 is a happy number, so this should be one joyous basho. J
o Around Massashigawa-beya, the 68 bus runs from Harvard/Holyoke Gate to Kendall/M.I.T. via Broadway
o My favorite element, Erbium, has the atomic number of 68. Why is it my favorite? Maybe because its symbol is one of most common utterances – Er. Erbium’s atomic weight is 167.26.
o In the year 68 AD Nero, Roman Emperor, committed suicide. …and I thought that 68 was a happy number.
o Does anyone remember Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special
o A certain unnamed university (say in Happy Valley) lists #68 in it’s agronomy facts as “Manure Spreader Calibration. I’m guess you would want to get this one right. (Yuck!)
· This banzuke has 157 BSers That’s down 11 from last basho. L
o 114 BSers are active Ichimoners on the banzuke (-8 from Aki). The banzuke color/non-color ratio is now 72.6% ichimoner-laden. Just 43 spots are devoid of ichimoner color.
o Jonidan is the most boring division. White walls, white floors, white-notated BSers. Boring!!! The white sand beaches of the sd division fields 44.4% color-challenged ones.
· The Ichimon banzuke is as colorful as it has been since waaaaaaay before the ICF. Drop by & see the world’s only banzuke brought to you in brilliant Ichicolor ™? I guarantee that, if you play BS, your shikona is there.
· This is the 14th basho with 8 ichimons! It’s the 26th with at least 7 ichimons.
o DeSuGi remains in the odd “unofficial” category, as they still under the 10 member min. PLEASE, can someone join them so I can stop writing this?!?!
o Sakura now has just 10 members on the active banzuke. They still list a few banzuke-gai guys, but Japan’s own ichimon won’t be in the running for the ICF unless they field all 10 this time! How about some nice Fall recruits for them?
o Massashigawa is getting awfully close to the 10 member minimum. If you’re thinking of joining, the Founding Ichimon is your best bet. J
· If you are interested in joining an ichimon, please Click here to find out more. All 8 ichimons would love to have you.
o You might want to exercise before trying out for an ichimon. How about Sumo hopping?
· Did you know that Bench Sumo has a BS Frappr site (brought to us by North Poler Marushiki)? Add you name and location, so we can send post-basho prizes (& tax collectors) your way. J
· It was a cold day in Aki, as the North Polers won their 3rd ICF in a nail-biter over the Doits.
o Apparently, the Polers were quick to get their marketing arm in gear, as they now have a new soda on the market
o The Frosties aren’t resting on laurels either. Here is a recent shot of their asageiko. I sure hope they brushed their teeth before commencing practice.
· It’s all in the BAG. The Ichimoner Basho-at-a-Glance™ (a.k.a., the ‘BAG’) gives everyone a chance to see all the prizes handed out on a single page. There are even links to some of the more memorable basho moments (if I remember to do them). ;-) Stop by the Ichimon Pages, click the Basho-at-a-Glance & enjoy. J
· We finally figure out why Centipedes are odd.
· I found my new favorite pickle! Gundelsheim Garlic Barrel Pickles. Now, if could just get my hands on some Nürnberg bratwurst, lunch would be complete. J
Firsts
· The first “official” Bench Sumo run began with a Friday September 6th 1999, 6 pm (Japan time) deadline – hereafter referred to as Bench Sumo Day!!!! J
o Adding to the friendly nature of the game, the entry form included a “Pre-basho interview answer (by your cyber-rikishi)” to the question "What are your expectations for this cyber-basho?"
· There were 7 players in the trial ½ basho Yubiquitoyama, Maeden, Seigatakaigai, Myobudani, Tabehodaiyama, Chijanofuji, Jejima, Philanomi, Nomihodaiyama, and Kintayama (Missing the “ma”?).
· The first “official” Bench basho featured 18 players. 8 of them are still with us today: Maeden, Chijanofuji, Jejima, Kintamayama, Marushiki, Nekonishiki, Gaijingai & Doitsuyama.
· The very first Bench Sumo bout was between M1w Haraiboshi S-Ow Maeden. It ended in a 12-11 Uwatenage. The smelly old sow (er, S-Ow) lost. I suppose that would mean that Haraiboshi scored the very first ginboshi, huh?
· The first match going to the bench didn’t occur until day 4. Fittingly, the bout was between BS founder Jejima and T-G Nekonishiki. They tied at 7 apiece, and Jejima took the Sotogake win with future Yokozuna Kaiho getting the nod over Nekonishiki’s Kyokutenho.
o Speaking of ties… I have recently got back into knot tying. This guy does some amazing stuff
o If you really want to get into knots, try the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
· The first musubi-no-ichiban matchup was a Day 1 battle between M6e Gaijingai and M3w Tochiaraki, proving that the torikumi-makers were still working the kinks out of the bench sumo “realism” system. :-P
· The first BS perfect score was sent in by Robanoumi on Day 1 (bout 2). A total of 4 perfect scores were earned that day, including Ookihito, (who else) Doitsuyama, (future Perfect man) Gaijingai and (the aforementioned Robanoumi.
· The first BS KK belongs to Doitsuyama, who got his on Day 9 in a 9-5 victory over Chijanofuji.
· The first BS MK belongs to Kitakaze, who lost 11-12 on Day 10 to Zentoryu. Also getting MK’s on the same day were Kintamayama & Philanomi (who’s MKs came after Kitakaze’s bout, so technically, were’nt first).
· The first BS Yusho belongs to Doitsuyama (now with SFI). He had an 11-4 record. Marushiki, Robanoumi, Zentoryu & (of course, the permanent Bridesmaid) Gaijingai earned the jun-yusho.
· The first ICF went to Doitsugo ichimon in the Aki ’04 basho. They overtook Massashigawa by 22.38 ITA points – a convincing victory.
· The first BSer to go from Jonidan to Makuuchi was Sakuran-retiree Shomishuu.
· The first drink to effect the outcome of a Bench Sumo match was Calpis! See what happens when you concentrate?
· New recruits? Snore….
o Maybe everyone is too busy carving pumpkins for Halloween. Here’s one that might be themed to us. Sumo? Yes. Scary? Yes
· Intais: We had 1 Ichimoner say bye-bye.
o Sakuran Taniazuma Terofubuki ended a long BS career (starting in Nagoya 02 at ms15w), which featured 38 active bashos. Taniazuma went as high as J6w,getting there after 31 bashos, and grabbing a Makushita jun-yusho, the GOP, 2nd in the MCP, a Fighting Spirit, a Tech Prize, 2 Yaocho Bums and a No Cigar. Taniazuma’s career record was 264-306 (0.463), and the Blossomer managed a low 0.395 KK rate.
· 8 ichimoners have fallen off the banzuke for November. SumoTalkers Kungliazuma & mikeama, former #2 last alphabetically/SumoForumer Zeokage, Sakurans Fuyuboufuuu & Chibi_IMO, DeSuGi Teodorishiki & North Poler Hitotsuboshi all overslept in Aki, so don’t have any status in Bench Sumo right now. Let’s hope they reapply before the deadline, so they can take advantage of the Bench Sumo credit card. :-p
· Two ichimons (Doitsugo & ISI) are still flying without oyakatas. Please see their respective personnel office for an application. BTW – it’s not a really taxing job. I might e-mail you once a basho for a lineup (usually don’t), but beyond that, there’s not much to it. Seriously.
o Maybe ISI would have an oyakata if Katherine Heigl started liking them.
· Jomojo watch: 33 bashos since his intai. L I think Bench would be better with this Poler. Don’t you?
· As is usual, in all of BS there are 70 sekitori (44.6%) & 106 toriteki (54.8%).
o When just ichimoners are tallied, there are 57 sekitori ichimoners (same as Aki) and 56 non-sekitori ichimoners (-8 from Natsu). That’s 50% sekitori ichimoners.
· SumoTalk edges out ISI as the largest ichimon, despite dropping 2 to Banzuke-gai. The Talkers have 22 Centipedian Benchers in the mix (um, I’m not sure I would by any mix that had centipedes) :-p.
o In the “bigs” category : Info-Sumo (22) is at their Aki numbers. Losing 1, SFI (14) draws even with the Aki champs, NPI (15), and Doitsugo.
o In the “smalls” category:. The Greatest of All Ichimons, Massashigawa (12), remain at their Aki level. Sakura (10) is barely holding on to “official” status after losing 2 to banzuke-gai.
o The smallest ichimon (“unofficial” with an asterisk) is DeSuGi, are still shy of becoming “official” with 8 members.
· How are each ichimon’s members spread across the banzuke?
o Doitsugo has the big melons sitting atop their team’s head. The German-sprechers are 79% sekitori, by far beating all other ichimons. NPI (64%) and SFI (64%) stayed at Aki’s sekitori numbers to tie for the second biggest heads. Massashigawa (58%) and ISI (50%) are the only other ichimons with a majority of paid BSers.
o The ichimon with the biggest bunch of tsukebitos are the DeSuGians. The Girls of Delight & Sumo have a ratio of 6 tsukebitos to their 2 sekitori (75%). The SumoTalkers are not far behind. 16 of the 21 of STIers are non-sekitori (73%). Sakura has 60% non-salaried BSers.
o Speaking of paid & unpaid BSers… Does anyone remember when we had a salaries in BS? (I’m still trying to get a grassroots movement going. For some reason, the bran movement didn’t work.) ;-)
· 36 BSers changed divisions this banzuke (22.9% of all BSers). 25 of those division changers were ichimoners.
o 20 division changes were in the good (i.e., upwards) direction. Anyone go to a promotion party?
o Sandanme has the most new faces (10) – 7 promotees & 4 demotees (33.3% of the division) will make the regular sd GG’s reach for their copy of the Bench Sumo Who’s Who.
· 38 BSers are at their high rank (29.9%). 23 of those are ichimoners. Moral of the story? Become an ichimoner, and get your high rank. J
· If you are looking at tweaking the design on you Bench Sumo, try this bench. I’m not sure that ou could get five on that one, but it would certainly make the Guest Gyoji sit up and take notice. :-p
· Let’s check up on those cheeky, streaky banzuke-makers.
o The longest streak of Ichimoners in rank order (e.g., J1e-J1w-J2e, etc) from the same ichimon is a relatively huge 5 ichimoners! Of course, there wasn’t much decision making on this one, since there was really no place else for these BSers to go. From O1w to S2e, all you will see are Doitsugoans. No place else on the banzuke has more than 2 ichimoners in a row. The bottom of the banzuke does have 5 U’s in a row, bu, again, therew was nothing the Banzuke Makers could do about that (short of some ichimon recruitment work). Nice work B-M’s T
o If you look at streakers on the same side of the banzuke (e.g., J1e-J2e-J3e-J4e, etc.), the B-M’s really shuffled the deck well, too. The biggest group of ichimoners are 3 Doits in the aforementioned group at O1w-O2w-S1w. There are 2 large groups of U’s: a 5-in-a-row gang at jd10e-jd11e-jd12e-jd13e-jd14e and a gaggle of U’s at jd4e-jd5e-jd6e-jd7e. Let’
o The only roadblock at a division boundary are the two SumoForumers and two SumoTalkers at the bottom of Makuuchi and Makushita, repectively.
o From Juryo to mid-way in Jonidan, all of the Doits are on the East side of the Banzuke.
o SumoTalker Haidouzo is a bit lonely, being the only West-side STIer in Makushita, while 5 of his heyamates are on the East-Side. Can you imagine how long Haidouzo has to wait on the bus to get to asageiko?
· Looking to out on some weight on bench? Nothing could get it done faster than an ice cream sandwich bench!
· This basho’s soloists… 13 ichimoners will be the sole fighters for their ichimon in a division. Every ichimons has at least one single. Doitsugo has 3 singles, making them the most likely to stay out late at clubs.
· This basho’s blanks… Just DeSuGi is left with a hole in their division coverage – no Makuuchians for the little ichimon.
· In the Ichimon East-West game, the West wins by a safety. The west side of the banzuke features 58 I’s, while the East is color-deprived with only 56 Ichimoners (50.9% West, for you “percentage” types).
· Heyagashira: Who are our ichimons’ heyagashira this basho?
o Just 3 ichimons with sanyaku heyagashiras?

· Career Records: The top w/l career record in Bench Sumo is held by Unaffiliated Ganryu (or is he unaffiliated?).
o Of the top 10 career records, 4 of them are owned by SumoTalkers! Doitsugo and ISI have 2 each. The other 3 belong to Unaffs. (Boooo!!! Hissss!!!).
o In keeping with the 10th anniversary theme, how about a top 10 list? (for the full list, see the Career Record Stats (click here).

o The low career record in all of BS is 0.333, owned by a single-basho Jonidaner Unaff. The low career record for an Ichimoner is 0.367, held by a DeSugian.
o 102 BSers have career winning records (65% of all BSers).
o Just 2 BSers (a Poler and a SumoForumer) have a 0.500 records. One has been at it for 64 bashos, and is still dead even.
o How about a list of top career records at each ichimon?

· There have been 4523 active bashos among the current crop of BSers on the banzuke. That means the average BSer has been active 28.8 bashos.
o 134 BSers on the banzuke participated last basho.
· The current BSers have amassed 793 double-digit bashos (or 1 double digit basho for each BSer every 5.05 bashos).
o 18 double-digit scores were earned in the past basho (13.2% of all Natsu participants).
o All-time, there have been 1232 double-digit scores earned (out of 7524 total scores). That’s 16.4% double digit bashos.
o
· Still, just 3 BSers have been active in each & every BS basho: NPIers Chijanofuji & Jejima and SFIer Doitsuyama. Of those 3, two of them have been Ozeki. Just 1 is presently in Makuuchi. The 2nd and 3rd? They are ruling mid-Juryo – one, sporting a traffic cone mage. ;-).
o SFIer Ozeki Kintamayama has missed just 1 basho.
o Just 6 active BSers (6 ichimoners) were present at the birth of Bench Sumo (Aki 1999): NPIers Chijanofuji, Marushiki & Jejima, SFIers Doitsuyama, Kintamayama, Nekonishiki, Massashigawan Gaijingai and Unaff. Maeden.
· Over the span of Bench Sumo, 525 shikonas have been registered and played the game.
· Only 21 active BSers have been in all 5 divisions.

o Only Sakura has no Quint-divs on the banzuke.
· 39 BSers (24.8%) on the current banzuke have not missed a basho since their debut! 27 of those stubborn ones are ichimoners.
· As Bench Sumo grew, so did the divisions. How many active BSers began in which division?

§ The Makushita-starter is becoming a rare beast. Only 3 of them left: Doitsugoan Ozeki Flohru, Unaff shimodahito & Unaff Akokoneko. We better put them under the endangered BSer program.
§ Juryo & Makushita starters are the only starter classes without a member in each division.
· KK/MK Streaks: So who holds the longest KK and MK streaks in Bench Sumo?
o There is a knot of 5 assorted BSers atop the KK-streaking tower with 5 KKs in a row.
o MK-streak leader, Unaff. Chinofuji has a tied for 6th longest MK streak going.
o Sakuran chabonowaka needs a KK to avoid an Ocho-MKsho.

· The Mighty Makuuchian division ™ stayed at its Aki numbers, and now field 36 Ichimoners. You can be sure that most ICF bonuses will go to ichimoners of color here.
o The big M division easily holds on to its #1 spot among all divisions in ichimoner concentration (85.7%), staying a three percentage points above Juryo.
· Doitsugo had been the big dog in Makuuchi for as long as I can remember; however, ISI is now the biggest/baddest in the division. They field 9, one more than the Doits. At 21.4% of the top division, they should easily get some ICF points here. Doitsugo has 19%, so will give them a run for their money. SFI (7) is at Nagoya numbers, but are they up to the task of winning this time? ;-) NPI (5), Massashigawa (4), Sakura (2) will all be in hot pursuit of points, too. The SumoTalkers (1) will have to fight with just Sokkenaiyama here. The DeSuGians TI (0) is stuck without ICF points in M.
o 7 of the 8 ichimons have at least 1 member in Makuuchi. DeSuGi ichimon is the only holdout, after they lost one to an MK fall.
o Four ichimons have the biggest parts of their membership in Makuuchi. Doitsugo (57%) is the most M-heavy. 50% of SFI has been successful in reaching the Top Dogs. The Info-Sumoers (45%) are 1 Izzie shy of half their mass in the Big Head division. With Maguroyama’s promotion, NPI (36%) is now M-top heavy. Massashigawa (33%) has a big ol’ melon for a head, too.
o The Unaffiliateds (6) make up 14.3% of the division. There’s nothing to fear here. Move along.
o Looking at individual ichimons, ISI, Doitsugo, SFI all beat or match the number of U’s in Makuuchi.
o The net gainers in M: NPI (+1) gained due to simple promotions. ISI (+1) sent 2 up, but 1 down. Omedetou!
o The net losers in M: SumoTalk (-1) and DeSuGi (-1) each lost one due to a demotion.
o The net zeros in M: SFI traded a promotee for a demotee. Massashigawa, Doitsugo & Sakura did it the old fashioned way – by sitting on their duffs & doing nothing.
· The list of “Makuuchiers who have never been in any other division” alone is down to one. Sakuran Rannohana is the only BSer to never have left Makuuchi (58 bashos now!)
o There are no longer any BSers who can say that they were M’s since the very first basho. Chijanofuji was the last of the Mohicans
· Yokozuna East Charliki (ISI) holds the top spot on the banzuke for the 9th time & 7 in a row.
· The Hatsu banzuke features 9 Sanyaku. The last time we had 9 was in Aki 09.
o 9 sanyaku spots and just 1 U gumming up the works. That equates to an 88.9% Ichimoner advantage
o There are 3 sekiwake and 2 komusubi this basho.
o Just 3 of our 8 ichimons are represented in the Sanyaku ranks: ISI, Doitsugo and Massashigawa. Doitsugo, with 5 sanyakuers, completely dominates here. ISI (2) and Massashigawa (1) seem puny in comparison.
o This is the first time ever we have seen 5 ichimons without a sanyakuer.
o Of the 4 niyaku (i.e., S & K) from last basho, only 1 didn’t stat there. Both Aki sekiwakes are still there. Frinkanohana (Doit.) got a promotion to sekiwake, while the other Komusubi (sadly a Massashigawan) got the MK boot.
· Rannohana (Sakura) holds the BS record for most time at Sanyaku. The ol’ perennial Ozeki has 43 of his 66 bashos in sanyaku. Chijanofuji (NPI) is the next closest at 32 bashos.
· Only 20 BSers (all-time) have held a sanyaku spot on the banzuke for 10 or more bashos.
· This is the 6th basho with one Yokozuna
o The last Yokozuna intai was right after Kyushu 08 – the second Yokozuna Ekigozan’s.
o The last Yokozuna promotion was Yokozuna Charliki’s (a.k.a., Yokozuna #3) in Hatsu 10.
o The first Yokozuna promotion was Yokozuna Gernobono’s in Natsu ’04! He reigned till Hatsu 2006

· The Yokozuna position is occupied by an ichimoner for the 6th basho in a row
o Y1e Charliki (Info-Sumo) has had a rough couple of basho. After taking Natsu off, the Yokozuna was noticeably out of shape, and suffered back-to-back 5-10 bashos. The BS YDC issued encouragement to Charliki for success in Kyushu (as do we all). The Yokozuna has a 27-33 (0.450) record at Yokozuna, and a 329-271 (0.548) career record! Go, Go, Charliki! Get that KK!
· This is Yokozuna Charliki’s 6th basho at the rank of Yokozuna (3rd longest).
o Gernobono holds the title of longest consecutive and/or non-consecutive run at Bench Yokozuna – 10 bashos! He did that from Nagoya 04 to Kyushu 05.
· We are have 3 Ozeki for the third basho in a row, keeping the numbers flat from the Aki occurrence of BS. All Ozeki are ichimoners. J
o There have been only 9 bashos with 4 Ozeki.
o There have been two periods of 5 Ozeki: Aki 2003 to Haru 2004 & Kyushu 2006 to Hatsu 2007
o There have been two periods of 6 Ozeki: Nagoya 2006 to Aki 2006 & Haru 2007 to Nagoya 2007
o Only twice has Bench Sumo had a Yokozuna-Ozeki: Hatsu 2005 (Gernobono) and Haru 2008 (Ekigozan)
o Here is the all-time list of BS Ozeki (and their stats).
§ Only 9 of the 20 Ozeki/former-Ozeki are no longer playing Bench Sumo
§ Only 2 active former-Ozeki are not in currently Makuuchi. That means that 25% of the Makuuchi division is made of former Ozeki.
· No Ozeki promotions from September. L
o The last Ozeki promotion was Natsu 10 when Itachiyama (Doit) was elevated after a second double digit (11-4 in this case) and nearly unprecedented 2nd yusho in a row.
o The fastest rise to Ozeki is 4 bashos (both Doitsuyama & Gaijingai)
o The slowest rise to Ozeki is the 41 bashos it took Yokozuna Ekigozan (NPI) to achieve his penultimate rank.
§ If you want to get technical, it took Kintamayama 52 bashos since the last time he was Ozeki to be re-Ozeki’d. That’d qualify for the longest Ozeki recycle time. J

o Doitsugo is the only ichimon to field 3 Ozeki at the same time
o Info-Sumo, Doitsugo & NPI are the only ichimons to ever field 2 Ozeki at the same time.
o Massashigawa is the king of O’s. The Chowdaheads have had 4 Ozeki, the tops among all ichimons.
o Six Ozeki have dropped from O, only to come back at some point in their career. They are: Gaijingai (1st promotion = 2000/03; 2nd = 2003/07), Chijanofuji (2000/07,2005/03), Rannohana (2003/05, 2008/05), Takatamale (2003/09,2006/09), Kintamayama (1st promotion = 2000/07; 2nd = 2009/05) & Randomitsuki (1st promotion = 2000/07; 2nd = 2009/05)
· No Ozeki demotions this time!
o The last Ozeki demotion was former Ozeki Randomitsuki, who lost a battle with the KK demon on day 12 of Hatsu 09. Of course, he returned of his own volition.
o The last (& only) Ozeki to step down at the rank was Ozeki Sashimaru, who unexpectedly intai’d in Natsu’ 10.
o Rannohana-zeki, is the only BSer to recover Ozeki status with 10 wins immediately after falling to Sekiwake (Haru 08).
o Gernobono is the only Bench Ozeki to never have gone kadoban. Of course, he went on to better things after just 2 bashos…
· All Ozeki positions are occupied by ichimoners for the 29th basho in a row
o O1e Randomitsuki (Massashigawa) was the sole active Ozeki in the Aki basho. He got his KK on senshuraku, and is awarded the top Ozeki spot for it. This is the 4th time Randomitsuki has seen the clear blue sky (well while looking around Yokozuna Charliki) of the top banzuke spot (2nd in a row), and it’s his 4th time as O1e.
o O1w Itachiyama (Doitsugo) vacationed during the warm month of September, so missed Aki. Itachiyama is riding a 5-basho KK streak, so there are no worries about that K-word for now.
o O2e Flohru (Doitsugo) recovered from a kadoban in Natsu, then promptly sat out Aki. As such, he gets the bottom Ozeki spot for it.
· This is Randomitsuki’s 12th (7th since re-promotion), Itachiyama’s 4th and Flohru’s 20th (6th since re-promotion) basho at the rank of Ozeki.
o Rannohana holds the title of longest consecutive and/or non-consecutive Bench Ozeki – 29 bashos! He did that from Natsu 03 to Hatsu 08.
o The 2nd longest all-time run belongs to current Yokozuna Charliki (Haru ’07 – Kyushu –‘09).
· There are 3 Sekiwake this time – up one from last basho. All three are Doits!
o S1e Frinkanohana (Doitsugo) got his third 9-6 in a row, and is now at the rank of Sekiwake for the second time (the last being Haru 10). Frink-zeki is also at his career high rank (we’ll pause while the champagne corks fly). Three back-to-back 9-6’s is an excellent way to start an Ozeki run. Let’s see if he can get the 15-0 that would likely be required for ascension into Ozekihood. J
o S1w Mariohana (Doitsugo) was ranked at S1e last basho, but took time off to heal a sore, um, sore. He drops to S1w, but has two consecutive 10-5’s under his mawashi. Another big double digit basho should make the BS Kyokai consider an Ozekiship for this Doit (Could we stand 3 Doitsugo Ozekis at the same time?)
o S2w o Meyeryu (Doitsugo), just like heyamate Mariohana, was ranked at S1w last basho, but took time off, and dropped a half rank due to it. Also like Mariohana, Meyeryu has two consecutive 10-5’s under his mawashi. Could you imagine the bedlam is both got 13-2’s, and we had 4 Doitsugo Ozekis at the same time? I can’t even imagine what the paycheck to their oyakata (um, who’s that?) would be.
· Takatamale (Massashigawa) and Gaijingai (Massashigawa) hold the BS record for most time at Sekiwake. My two buddies each have 11 bashos as sekiwakes
· Two Komusubi adorn the banzuke time. Only one of them knows the joys of fabulous Ichicolor ™ .
o K1e dimitri (Unaff) returns to the sanyaku ranks for the first time since Kyushu 2009 after going 9-6 in Aki. This is dimitri’s second appearance at Komusubi, and 5th appearance in sanyaku. It’s also the 3rd time he’s been ranked at K1e. dimitri is riding a 3-basho KK wave of 9-6’s. We look forward to a fourth (& then a declaration of allegiance to Massashigawa-beya)
o K1w Kaiomitsuki (ISI) needed just a simple 8-7 KK from M1e to make it to sanyaku for the first time. You know it seems like just yesterday when we were welcoming him to Makuuchi. In reality, the Izzie took 9 bashos in the top division to make it this far. Kaiomitsuki’s trip to shin-Komusubi-hood began in Aki 05, when he was a cute little jd113. After 16 bashos he broke into sekitori land as a Juryo, and then made it to Makuuchi in Natsu 09 (8 bashos later). He has bounced around the Makuuchi locker room since then, never dropping to Juryo. Now, after 31 bashos, he has cracked the sanyaku ceiling. His BS career mark is 213-177 (0.546), and he can strut proudly with a very high KK rate of .4%. Kaiomitsuki’s tsukebitos have to dust his Makuuchi yusho portrait, his sd yusho certificate, 2 technique prizes, a KCC, a jun-yusho, a second in the MCP, and even have to dust his Yaocho Bum (I wouldn’t want that job!). Congrats on your sanyaku!
· Leonishiki (SumoForum) holds the BS record for most time at Komusubi. The Lion of Spain has been at the junior sanyaku rank for 14 bashos. The closest is Getayukata (NPI) at 9 bashos.
· The BS Kyokai presented the key to the fancy washroom to 5 lucky BSers. All but one are ichimoners. Maguroyama is the only returnee, so we have 4 new shinny-M’s! Welcome to the top division, Makuuchians!!!
o Maguroyama (NPI) makes his 3rd appearance in the top division, having last been here in Kyushu 09. Maguroyama took the Aki jun-yusho with a 10-5 and the Juryo version of the Aki’s Quality Award.
o toonoryu (ISI) finally gets to Makuuchi after 37 bashos. The 6+ year journey started at jd19e in Haru 05, and got here on the merits of a 10-5 jun-yushu from J4e in Aki. toonoryu brings a 226-194 (0.538) career record and 57% KK rate to the division. Also tagging along are toonryu’s 17 prizes: a Makushita yusho, 4 jun-yushos, 2 Fighting Spirits, 6 Tech Prizes, a No Cigar, placing twice in the MCP, a KCC quarter.
o Terarno (ISI) is a shinny-M after 36 bashos! I’m sure he was a bit surprised when the 8-7 from J4e landed him an M15e spot, but I’m also sure he wouldn’t trun it down for anything! Terarno started things in Jonidan at jd12e in Kyushu 04, getting to Juryo in Haru 2007 on the merits of back-to-back 10-5 bashos. He had a bit of torikumi trouble, slipping all the way back to sadname, but came back with a vengeance with an 11-4 there. He made it back to Juryo in Hatsu of this year, and after 5 KK’s in a row, gets the nod from the BS Banzuke Committee to earn his first Makuuchi position. . Terarno brings a 265-260 (0.505) career record and 57.1% KK rate to the top division. Terarno has earned 14 prizes: 4 jun-yushos (always a bridesmaid?) , a GOP, 2 techniques, 3 Yaocho Bums, a Fighting Spirit, a Nakabi Prize (the good one), a 3rd and 4th in the MCP, and a quarter final in the KCC. Welcome to the top division, Terarno!
o Hokuyutaka (Unaff) had an 11-4 from Juryo 11, and finds a spot in Makuuchi after spending just a single division in the 10-ryu division. I don’t have an easy way to check, but suspect that Hokuyutaka might be one of only a handful to spend a single basho in Juryo before a promotion to Makuuchi. It must’ve been the yusho that convinced the Banzuke-makers to offer up that generous promotion. Hokuyutaka gets to Makuuchi after just 13 bashos, and drags a 108-72 (0.600) career record along (which is tied for the best Makuuchi record, and 8th among active BSers overall). Ichimons recruiters, you might want to take notice of Hoku-zeki’s 75% KK rate, too. In a short career, Hokuyutaka has 5 prizes already: the Aki Juryo yusho, a KCC-Q, two jun-yushos and a Yaocho Bum. I suspect Hokuyutaka might be a sanyaku fixture in the near future. Best of luck & welcome to the top division.
o Kitakachiyama (SFI) has 4 entries into Juryo, spending just 1 basho each time. In the past, Kita-zeki dropped right back into Makushita; however, this time, on the merits of an Aki 9-6, gets his first nod into Makuuchi. The Nagoya 11-4 in Makushita probably didn’t hurt his promotion chances, either. Kitakachiyama started at sd24e in Haru 03, so it’s taken 47 bashos for this sd starter to get here. He’s got a 326-334 (0.494) – just 1 of 2 Makuuchians with a sub-0.500 record. Of course, with a 12-3 Kitakachiyama can even that up. The Shinny-M Forumer’s prizes include a yusho, 2 jun-yushos, a Tech Prize, 2 No Cigars and the GOP.
· 5 new Juryoans were Makuuchians in Sept. All but one of the demoted ones are ichimoners, and the mix looks like a United Nations meeting, as nearly all ichimons were involved. An Izzie, an STIer, a DeSuGian, a Forumer and an Unaffiliated all suffered a pay cut this time. You’ll easily recognize them in the heyas. They’ll be the ones clipping the coupons to make ends meet with new lower salaries.
· What are the fastest climbs to Makuuchi? Well, that’s tough, since we added divisions as the game grew, and not everyone started at the same division… So here’s a try:
o Starting from Makuuchi: Hey, Einstein, care to guess? :-p
o Starting from Juryo: Unaff. Awomaru was in Juryo (J1w start) just 1 basho before ascending to Makuuchi. SFIer Manekineko reached Juryo after 4 bashos (from J16w).
o Starting from Makushita: Doit Fluffyyama, Unaffiliated Wakatanuki & U shimodahito all did it in 9 bashos. Massashigawan Akishiki did it in 10.
o Starting from Sandanme: Frinkanohana (of the U’s) went from sd to M in 7 bashos. Doit Metzinowaka did it in 10 bashos, but only 8 were active. NPIer Vincentoryu reached M after 9 bashos.
o Starting from Jonidan: SumoTalker Captain Sokkenaiyama did it in 11 bashos.
· How many Jonidan-starters who have made it to Makuuchi (in “getting there order”)? There have only been 23 toonryu (ISI) is the latest.
o The first 10 were: Sakuran Shomishuu, U Tosahayate, Izzie Kasamatsuri & Damimonay, Izzie Kotononami and Kaiopectate (the killer, well, you know), Izzies Fatakiyama, Kaiowaka, Unaff tokugawa, DeSuGian Watashi & Izzie/shin-M Kaiomitsuki.
o 14 of the current Makuuchians made their start in Jonidan.
· What are the slowest climbs to Makuuchi? Again, that’s tough…
o Starting from Makuuchi: Ummmm…
o Starting from Juryo: It took Takanorappa (the slug) 20 bashos to reach the top division. His record is safe, as nobody has topped him again this basho. Three Juryo starters can still overtake him, since they have yet to get there: Massie Sherlockiama (61), SFIer Kofuji (61), Unaff. Derufidurono (61).
o Starting from Makushita: Tenkuukaikatsu (Unaff) holds the record for slowest climb (43 bashos) to Makuuchi from ms. The ichimoner taking the longest to get to M from ms is retired Massie oyakata Unagiyutaka (23). This record is safe for eternity (or until we get more Makushita starters), as all Makushita starters have either already hit Makuuchi, or have intai’d.
o Starting from Sandanme: SumoForumer and shinny-Maku Kitakachiyama (47 bashos) is the most stubborn to get from sd to M. He tried from Haru 03 till Kyushu 10 to get to the big dressing room, and has finally made it! Taka There are many others still in the hunt that could overtake him.
o Starting from Jonidan: Izzie Terarno gets his shin-M on after 37 bashos! Plenty of jd-starters who can catch him, though.
· The most trips to Makuuchi? NPIer Jejima has done it 9 times, and as he’s at J9e now. He’ll need monster numbers (or a friendly banzuke-maker) to raise that number. 9 times is an all-time BS record.
· The most time in Makuuchi? Rannohana (Sakura) has 67 bashos ranked in the top division, and has never been in any other division. Doitsuyama is right behind at 66 bashos.
· Old vs. new?
o The Makuuchian with the smallest number of active bashos in Bench is shinny-Maku Hokuyutaka (Unaff). The newbie-M/fresh meat/chew toy has been active for only 13 active bashos (w/no koshos).
o The Makuuchian with the highest number of active bashos are the venerable Doitsuyama (SFI). He has, of course, seen every BS basho (69 of them, counting the upcoming basho)
· The longest current KK streak in Makuuchi is a modest 5 bashos. How modest is it? Well, 4 BSers in Makuuchi share the lead. Ozeki Randomitsuki (Massashigawa), Ozeki Itachiyama (Doitsugo), Tosahayate (Unaff.) and Terarno (ISI) haven’t seen 8 losses since Hatsu of this year. Let’s see who survives till next time.
o 26 of the 42 Makuuchians (66.6%) have a KK streak going. 19 of those are more than 1 basho! Way to go, M’s! That’s the best KK rate in Bench!
o 11 of the top 20 current KK streakers are from the top division.
· The longest current MK streak in Makuuchi is 4, held by a Unaff who has an awfully good career record.
o 14 of the 42 Makuuchians (33.3%) have a MK streak going. 9 of those are multi-basho MKs. L
· The best career win-loss record among current Makuuchians is still 0.626 (3rd best in BS), which is held by Sokkenaiyama (STI) and his 122-73. Sokkenaiyama has just 2 MKs out of 11, and has 6 double digit bashos.
o The low career win-loss record among current M’s is 0.486. A Frosties owns that frosty record. It’s the 33rd lowest (or 125th best) in BS.
o 2 BSers in Makuuchi (4.8%) have career losing records. A career winning record is possible for 1of the 5 in Kyushu).
o 5 other Makuuchians are in (theoretical) range to go sub-0.500 after Natsu. Best of luck! J
· We remain at Aki the numbers for ichimoner humans in Juryo. Juryo fields 21 ichimoners.
o 7 spots are devoid of color (i.e., filled by transparent/colorless/boring BSers). Looks like ichimon bonus-fest time here.
o The Juryo division now ranks third in the most ichimon-populated division contest with 75% ichimoners
· There is a bit more parity in Juryo. STI (4) and NPI (4) are the biggest in the ichimon. Massashigawa (3) & Doitsugo (3) all have about as good a shot at points. Sakura (2), SFI (2) and DeSuGi (1) have decent BSers here, so their point probability is up there, too. ISI (1) is, unexpectedly, flying solo in the division
o Percentage-wise, the largest part of Juryo is eaten up by STI & NPI – each at 14% of the division.
o The U’s have 25% of Juryo, so there is a decent chance that ICF bonuses may go bye-bye
o No ichimon has the biggest chunk of their membership in Juryo.
o The net gainers in Juryo were… STI (+2) have a promotion from sd and a demotion from Makuuchi to thank for their addition. Massashigawa (+1) gained a monkey. DeSuGi (+1) caught a falling star from Makuuchi.
o The net losers in Juryo were… ISI (-2) had a complicated exchange of 2 promotees to Makuuchi (toonoryu & Terarno), a demotee from Makuuchi (Kotononami), and a demotee to Makushita (Fatakiyama) to thanks for their drop. Doitsugo (-1) lost one to the minors. The North Polers (-1) had a happier way to lose a Juryoan – by promoting Maguroyama to Makuuchi.
o The net zeros in Juryo … Sakura (0) had a prisoner, um, sekitori/tsukebito exchange. SFI (0) did the same, but swapped between Juryo and Makuuchi.
· Just 4 Aki Makushitans were able to fit into the little Juryo division. Half are brand-new, right out of the package, shin-Juryoans. Three-quarters of the new J’s are ichimoners. Welcome aboard, 10-ryo Sekitori! J
o Kaiopectate (Massashigawa) is back in Juryo for a 10th basho (and a 5th trip). It makes me wonder is KKSM’s mawashi is woolen or the traditional silk? Anyway, Kaiopectate has spent just last basho there. Actually, he’s bounced back & forth between Juryo and Makushita for the past year. He was, of course, robbed of his right to the yusho by obviously shady transactions with the torikumi-makers. ;-) Instead, he was awarded a jun-yusho after an 11-4. He also distinguished himself with a quarter final showing in the Aki KCC, too. Best of luck in the paid ranks, o’ fearless leader/monkey
o Oskanohana (SumoTalk) took Makushita by storm in Aki. After taking the yusho with a 12-3, the SumoTalker grabbed a Tech Prize and the MCP, too. After 7 bashos, just 1 marred by a single KK. All the others have been no lower than a 9-6! Oskanohana brings along BS’s 2nd best career record, 66-39 (0.629), into the Juryo mix. Let’s see how it holds up with the paid rankers.
o Saruyama (Sakura) makes the blossoms of Juryo bloom after being in BS for just 9 bashos. Riding a wave of 3 KKs, the last being a 10-5 in Aki, the Monkey Mountain has earned a first trip to Juryo. Sauryama started in Jonidan at jd18e, and had 4 straight 10-5’s! Two slip-ups, and then three KK’s… That’s a nice way to enter Juryo! Saruyama carries a 82-53 (0.607) career record.
o GONZABUROW (Unaff.) won the Aki KCC with an 8-7, no less, and finds the last spot in Juryo. It’s the 3rd trip for the Unaffiliated to Juryo. GONZABUROW spent the last 5 bashos down in Makushita, so I’m guessing that he’ll need to get that kesho mawashi dusted before the next Juryo dohyo-iri. ;-)
· With all these monkeys swinging about, it was just a matter of time before they incorporated.
· Four Aki Juryoans rode the down elevator to Makushita for Kyushu – a Sakuran, a Doit, an Izzie and an Unaffiliated.
· The title of all-time & current “BSer with the most time (not necessarily consecutive) in Juryo” is owned by Jejima. The Frostie Rijicho will be in his 40th basho in Juryo this coming basho. He extends his streak after ending Haru with a “keep him in the middle of J” 9-6. Nobody else even has 30 bashos, so I think our Rijicho’s Juryo Ironman trophy is safe for quite some time.
o The Juryoan with the longest current Juryo streak is Anjoboshi (SFI). The Wascally Wabbit has been in Juryo for 12 straight bashos (since Hatsu ‘09) with 3 koshos.
o The longest unbroken current Juryo streak (i.e., non-kosho’d) streak is 9– held by Chijanofuji (NPI) and Ganzohnesushi (Unaff).
o Heiyu (Unaff) has the all-time consecutive streak in J (17 bashos). Heiyu was ranked in Juryo straight from Nagoya 02 to Haru 05, and now resides in Makushita. Sherlockiama (Massashigawa) is right behind at 16 straight (from Nagoya 00 – Hatsu ’03), but won’t be adding to that for some time.
o You know, Rijicho has always had that traffic cone hat. Why stop at a hat, when you can get the whole body cone going?
· Who’s taken the most trips to Juryo (from any direction of course)? Answer: A 2-way tie! Tate-gyoji/NPIer Jakusotsu, and Rijicho Jejima, oddly positioned next to each other in the banzuke, have 9 Juryo crossings each. The difference between the two is that Jejima has only crossed from the Makuuchi boundary, while Jakusotsu has both Makuuchi and Makushita experience. Hakaso, also from NPI, has 8 crossings, but is safely in the M8e spot, so unless there is a torikumi disaster for that Poler, we’ll see a two-way tie again in Hatsu.
· Old vs. new?
o The Juryoan with the lowest number of active bashos is STIer Oskanohana, who’s shin-Juryo’d into that spot. Oskanohana has been active 8 bashos (including the soon-to-be Kyushu)
o The Juryoan with the highest number of active bashos is NPIer Jejima, who’s been active each and every BS basho (68 of them this November)
· The longest current KK streak by a Juryoan is a barely worth mentioning 3 bashos. shimodahito (Unaff), Holleshoryu (Doitsugo), Oskanohana (STI) & Saruyama (Sakura) all share that honor.
o 11 Juryoans (39.29%) are attending KK parties from last basho. 6 of those (21.4%) are for more than 1 basho.
o Juryo’s KK rate is the worst, next to Jonidan, in all of BS.
· The longest current MK streak by a Juryoan is 6 bashos. That 5 MK streak is brought to you by a Delightful Juryoan from DeSuGi, who was kosho last basho. The last of those MKs sent her down to Juryo from her first (14-basho) visit there.
o 17 of the 28 Juryoans (60.7%) have a MK streak going. 10 of those (35.7%) are for more than 1 basho. Looks like there may be cash flow problem between the torikumi-makers and Juryo.
· The best career win-loss record among current Juryoers is (66-39 or 0.629) by SumoTalker Oskanohana. Oskanohana’s career record is 2nd best in Bench.
o 21 of the 28 BSers in Juryo (75%) have career winning records.
o 7 Juryoans have career losing records. 4 can reverse that with good scores in Kyushu.
o The low career win-loss record among current J’s is 0.481 (now owned by a Birdish Massashigawan).
· Makushita had a net decrease of 1 ichimoners from Aki. Kyushu’s Makushita division features 25 ichimoners.
o Even losing one, the Toughest Division™ is the second most ichimoner-populated (83.3%).
o The 5 Colorless Ones (16.7% of the division) have a bout as good a chance of stealing our points in this division, as Brett Favre has a chance of getting a text messaging plan from his Wife at Christmas. The ms division is bottoms when it comes to Unaffiliated presence.
· In Haru 08, we witnessed another Banzuke Stimulus Package, in which Makushita was re-shrunk to 30 members. The last time the Toughest Division was this small was in Haru ’03.
o The Makushita Division has seen 7 periods of growth and shrinkage. We are in the “But I just got out of the pool” stage now. :-p

· Abandon all hope, ye non-Izzies who enter here! Well, maybe not STIers, but everyone else. The Izzies (7) can have the lucky sevens. Only STI (6) can give them pause. NPI (3) and Sakura (3) together could give them some trouble, I suppose. DeSuGi (2), Massashigawa (2), SFI (1) and Doitsugo (1) equal an NPI/Sakura combo, too. If I were a betting man (but am not, as I don’t desire a 2-basho suspension), I’d give the bonus points to the Izzies or STI.
o Percentage-wise: ISI owns 23.3% of the Makushita division. STI has 20%.. The U’s own 16.7% of Makushita.
o 30% of all Sakurans call Makushita their home. That’s the biggest groups of Blossomers that’ll you’ll find anywhere.
o The net gainers in Makushita were… all single gainers. Doitsugo (+1) gained an Mser from Juryo. DeSuGi (+1) got their increase from an sd promotion. Sakura (+1) had a promotee from sd, and traded an ms for a Juryoan.
o The net losers in Makushita were… Kaiopectate’s promotion and Kinstubasa’s demotion got Massashigawa (-2) to where they are. A similar swap saw STI (-2) lose ground in the division.
· The net zeros in Makushita … ISI (0) sent one down from J & one down to sd for their zero. NPI (0) and SFI (0) sat like Kintsubasa on the couch watching TV – converting oxygen to carbon dioxide
· Four BSers will get 3 extra minutes of sleep, as the Banzuke-Makers decided to bestowed Makushita status on some happy tsukebitos from the Haru basho. Half promotees were ichimoners. There isn’t a single returning Makushitan in the bunch.. Please welcome back the shin Young Turks! J
o andonishiki (Sakura) got off to a rocky start in his debut basho at 4-11, but hasn’t MK’d since. Last basho, the Blossomer had a 10-5 jun-yusho and a Technique prize. It’s been a 7-basho ride for andonishiki to get this far.
o Ruziklao (Unaff) took the Sandanme yusho in Aki by 2 with a 12-3. A generous promotion from sd11 to ms11 (a 15 position bump) gets the colorless one his a second shot at Makushita. The last time Ruziklao was last seen in these parts was Kyushu 08 at ms20w. That was a one-basho stint.
o Katsunomi (DeSuGi)had a 9-6 Aki after a disastrous Natsu and a kosho in Nagoya, and returns to Makushita for a third time.
o crall (Unaff) gets into the Toughest division after just 7 bashos. The Banzuke-makers were a bit generous, awarding a ms promotion from sd7, but this BSer has a good track record. Four KK’s in a row will make anyone stand up & notice (well, except when I was in Juryo… grumble, grumble).
· The Banzuke-makers sent 3 BSers down to sd this time. The downward rikishi included a big-toed Massashigawan, a Hari Hairy One and an Unaffiliated.
· SumoTalker Pandaazuma earns the longest current consecutive run at Makushita by staying put in Makushita for 8 bashos. Pandaazuma takes over this honor from Kintsubasa (Massashigawa), after he fell to sd.
o The longest current consecutive run at Makushita (w/ Koshos) is held by former Yokozuna Ekigozan. Ekigozan has been ranked at Makushita since Haru 09 (11 bashos).
o The title of “Mr. Makushita” still belongs to SFIer Kofuji. He’s the BSer with the longest ever consecutive basho streak in ms (35 bashos – Aki ’01 through Nagoya ’07)! He current resides in sd.
· The BSer with the all-time most time in the Makushita division is SFIer Kofuji with 36 bashos. Despite his changing divisions awhile ago.
o Sherlockiama (Massahsigawa) is the current Makushitan with the most time (non-consecutive) in the division. BRSM has 35 bashos ranked in ms, and can overtake Kofuji if he stays put next basho. Given that he’s ranked at ms14e, in danger of dropping out of the division, there is even money that he’ll break the record.
· The most trips to Makushita (from an direction of course) is 7. Trip honors belong to Unaff. Ketsukai. That record is safe for next basho, as nobody with 6 crossings is within range.
· Old vs. new?
o The current Makushitan with the lowest number of active bashos is crall (Unaff). crall has only 6 bashos under his mawashi. The Ichimoner with the fewest bashos is currently in ms is andonishiki (Sakura)
o The current Makushitan with the most number of active bashos in Bench is none other than BS’s Big Red Sumo Motor, Sherlockiama (Massashigawa). He has 61 active bashos, eclipsing anyone else.
· The longest current Makushitan KK streak is 5. andonishiki (Sakura) is the sole 5-in-a-row Makushitan in the lead pack for KK streaking. With just 6 bashos, andonishiki has 5 KK’s. I am sooooo envious!
o 1 of our 30 MSers (43.3%) celebrated KKs last basho. 8 of those (26.7%) are riding a >1 KK streak.
o There are no Makushitans who have never had an MK. Sigh…
· The longest current MK streak in Makushita (& BS) is 7. A torikumi-luck-deprived Sakuran hasn’t seen a KK since Natsu 08 (which was a 10-5, BTW). It’s the poor MKer’s longest streak.
o 17 msers (56.7%) are feeling the sting of a MK bite. 8 of those MKers (26.7%) might need some anti-venom, as they have a deep MK bite of at least 2 bashos.
· The best career win-loss record among current Young Turks is owned by STIer Yaochiro, a 73-47 (0.608), good for 4th best in BS. I am a bit of awe at this STIer. Yaochiro does have a few MKs, but each & every KK has been a double-digit. 5 KKs and 5 double digits! Yikes! Last basho, Yaochiro went 10-5.
o 21 of the 30 BSers in Makushita (70%) have career winning records.
o 4 of the 9 of the sub-0.500 club members can reach 50/50 wins with strong bashos this time.
o The low career win-loss record among current msers is 0.473, shared by rebounding North Poler and a motorized Massashigawan. The low mark in ms is the 23rd lowest in BS.
· The Sandanme division gained 1 ichimoners this banzuke to level off at 20. That leaves just 10 U’’s the steal your points! (Booooo! Hisssssss!)
· You might have to call this division the White Sandanme division. Other than the Started Division ™, there are more Colorless Ones here (10) than in any other division.
· STI will be the dominate force in Sandanme, once again. The Talkies field 10 members here! It takes the combined corps of all other ichimons to match their numbers! Perhaps if ISI (2), Massashigawa (2), SFI (2), Doitsugo (1), DeSuGi (1), NPI (1) and Sakura (1) form the Coalition Against STI Attacking Bonus Addendums (CASABA), they won’t get smashed like melons in the bonus point area.
o SumoTalk ichimon has most of its members dangling their legs in the Sd pool. 45% of STI loiters here.
o SumoTalk consumes 33.3% of this division, which is the most among ichimons for sd. The U’s are equal in numbers to the STIers, so look for a West-side Story style rumble.
o The net gainers in Sandanme were… STI (+3) had 2 promotees straight up from jd and another from Makushita. Doitsugo (+1) gets their gain from a jd promotion..
o The net losers in Sandanme were… The Powder Puffies (-2) have no-show and a promo for their loss. Sakura (-1) shipped up andonishiki to ms.
o The net zeros in Sandanme… Info-Sumo (0) & Massashigawa (0) each got their goose eggs by dropping one from ms and one to jd. North Pole (0) just sat there blinking in an odd, disconcerting sort of way. SFI (0) promoted one to ms, got a jd up & comer.
· The banzuke-makers opened the door to sd to 6 BSers. 3 veteran BSers and 3 shinny-sders got the coveted (non-) pay raise. 4 of the 5 promotees have seen to the coloring books, and have picked a color form the MS Excel box of crayons. The other two are sticking to pen & pencil. Let’s hear some clapping for those who have left the starting division! J
o Ganryu (Unaff), holder of BS’s top career record, gets a second double digit KK in a row, and is finally rewarded with a shin-sandanme slot. Ganryu’s 3 bashos has given him a careers 29-16 record. No awards in Aki, but he carries 3 prizes from Nagoya into the division: a TP, an FS and a jun-yusho.
o J-Y
o Gawasukotto (STI) spent a basho back in Jonidan, before redeeming the return ticket to sd. Of course, sitting at jd1e, and getting a simple KK gets you a bump up, Gawasukotto went a step further, and got a 9-6.
o Kofuji (SFI), the Iron Man of Makushita, begins his return trip as he moves up to Sandanme after a single visit dip into Jd-land (I do hear he likes to travel). This is Kofuji’s 3rd time in the division. He had a 9-6 in Aki.
o Slartibartfass (Unaff), one of just one of 3 BSers to never have an MK, gets to move up to Sandanme for the first time after 2 bashos. Aki saw the Unaffiliated, highly sought after recruit, earn a 9-6 to make it a 17-13 career record.
o Qijuryu (Doit) got a 3rd KK, but is only now making a first trip into the sophomore division. I guess, getting a Nakabi prize, a Fighting Spirit, and a 12-3 jun-yusho finally made the Banzuke-makers sit up & notice.
o bcingu (STI) yaocho bummed into a promotion to Sandanme after a 142 tech pt (8-7) from jd9. It’s bcingu’s 3rd time in the division. Let’s hope there is some upward momentum that help this Centipedes’ feet stick here.
· Demotions into the Starter Division ™ from Sd included 3 BSers. A Massie, a SumoForumer and a DeSuGian were tossed into the well of sorrows that is Jonidan. ;-)
· The longest current consecutive run at Sandanme belongs to Sakura Captain, Kuramarujo. He’s been an sd fixture (actually, more of a leaky faucet) ;-) for 28 bashos (Nagoya 06). That’s an ichimoner all-time record, too. Stuck safely in sd10w, K-jo can probably expect to extend that streak this time.
o The all-time record-holder is Unaffiliated Toschima, who had 33 straight bashos in sd before falling to Jonidan (& subsequently, banzuke-gai).
· The BSer (& ichimoner) with the most time (not necessarily consecutive) in also Kuramarujo (Sakura). K-jo has spent 32 bashos (non-consecutive) ranked at sd. One more & he ties the record!
o Toschima (Unaff) holds the all-time record for time in Sandanme (33 bashos). Toschima’s last BS appearance was in Nagoya 08, followed by a banzuke-gai.
· The most trips to Sandanme all-time (from any direction of course) is 7. Poler Marushiki has crossed the line from both sides. Here trips sets an all-time BSer record!
o Izzie Imumaru currently has 6 Sd incursions, but would need to leave the division first to tie the record.
o Ouchiyama has 6 crossings, too, and is in position in jd to move up a 7th time.
· Old vs. new?
o The Sandanmer(s) with the lowest number of active bashos is newbie Unaffiliated Slartibartfass. Slartibartfass has just 3 bashos in BS. Two ichimoners, STIer Uoichiba & Doitsugoer Qijuryu have 7 bashos, and are tied for the ichimoners with the smallest number of bashos in sd.
o The Sandanmer with the largest number of active bashos is Unaff Heiyu Marushiki (57). Kofuji (54) is the ichimoner with that distinction.
· The longest current KK streak by a Sandanmer is a 3 KK string. Unaff Ganryu grabbed a 3rd KK after posting a 10-5 in September.
o 17 of 40 sd BSers (56.7%) are doing that happy dance thing with a KK from Aki. 5 of those (16.7%) have a KK streak of >1 going.
o Two Sandanmers have never had a MK. Both are unaffiliated, too (did you catch that, ichimon recruiters. Ganryu has 3 bashos and Slartibartfass has 2 bashos sans MK-malus.
o 100% of Sandanmers have had at least 1 KK (still). :-)
· The longest current MK streak by a Sandanmer is 3. A Massashigawan and a DeSuGian have nabbed 3 straight MKs .
o 13 of 40 sd BSers (43.3%) will be blaming the torikumi-maker for the rotten luck because of a MK/demotion combo from last basho. 4 of those (13.3%) are also thinking of drinking Pocari Sweat, which can only be done if you have a MK streak of >1 going (or are contemplating ruining your taste buds forever). :-p
· The best career win-loss record among current Sand-people is owned by Unaffiliated Ganryu. Duck-ryu also has the best record in BS - 29-16 (0.644). Never has an MK Ganyru seen.
o 15 of the 30 BSers in Sandanme (50%) have career winning records. What’s this? Flip a coin, get a KK? Eight sub-0.500ers have the potential to become +0.500ers after Kyushu.
o The low career win-loss record among current sders is 0.450 (13th lowest in BS) is held by a Forumer with a fondness for dragonflies.
· The Premier Division ™ continues its Ichimoner leak. Jonidan lost a humongous 8 ichimoners this basho, leaving the division with just 12 technocolored Jonnies out of the 27 in the division.
o Prepare to repel boarders!!! Unaffiliateds outnumber Ichimoners here 15-12 (44% U-polluted). It’s the only division where boring white outpaces dazzling Ichi-color™.
· It looks like Girl Power may rule Jonidan. DeSuGi (3) edges out all others in the division. Sakura (2) and SFI (2) each have a backup for their jders. Doitsugo (1), ISI, (1), Massashigawa (1) NPI (1) and STI (1) will have to rely on the prowess of their sole Jonidan deshi to win bonus points.
o Percentage-wise, DeSuGi has more scrawny rikishi (picture “the Skinnies” from Heinlein's "Starship Troopers") than any other ichimon. The Talkies own 11.3% of the division.
o Unfortunately for us, Jonidan is comprised of 55.6% Colorless Ones. That’s a lot of blandness. I’d heartily suggest to any ichimon that wishes to beef up their ranks, that their recruiting dollar would be best spent here.
o If you are looking for Delightful Girls (of Sumo), Jonidan is your best bet. DeSuGi has their largest contingents here (38%)
o The net gainers in Jonidan were…. ISI (+1) and Massashigawa (+1) each added one to the division. In the Izzie’s case, it was due to an 0-0-15, while Massashigawa’s addition was due to a MK’d big toe.
o The net losers in Jonidan were… STI (-4) saw a significant drop in Centipedes from the division. They lost 2 to banzuke-gai, and another 2 to Sandanme. Sakura (-3) lost theirs to attrition. Two Blossomers went banzuke-gai, and Taniazuma intai’d. Looks like a recruiting trip is needed for Japan’s Own Ichimon. Doitsugo (-1) had a joyous loss by promotion. NPI (-1) and SFI (-1) each had a no-show.
o The net zeros in Jonidan … DeSuGi (0) was stagnant in the division.
· The longest KK streak in Jonidan is 2 bashos. Amazingly, Asafan (DeSuGi) has 10 KKs and just 5 MKw, yet is still in Jonidan! Why? Well, she’s been absent for 3 bashos. The other dual KK’er still in jd is VESHANA (Unaff). VESHANA’s last 2 bashos were 10-5’s, so why is this U a jd? By missing the last 2 bashos, a demotion was sure to happen.
o No surprise here. 6 of the 27 Jonnies (29.6%) are riding KKs. Only the two mentioned above have a streak greater than 1 going.
· The longest MK streak in jd is 8 bashos! L That bad luck streak belongs to a Unaff’d BSer, who has the longest streak in BS. Gambatte!!!
o 19 of the 27 Jonidaners (70.4%) are nursing MKs. 13 of those are multiple MKs. This is by far the biggest MK pool among all divisions.
· Old vs. new?
o The Jonidaner with the lowest number of active bashos is a likely someone who joined at the last minute before the deadline :-p
o The Jonidaner with the largest number of active bashos Nekonishiki (SFI). This charter members of Bench Sumo has 59 active bashos – with Kyuhsu making it a flat 60.
· The lowest ranked ichimoner/BSer on the published banzuke is Sakura’s Matjilla at jd19e.
· Who holds the longest current streak (with banzuke-gais) for bashos in Jonidan? Our unfriendly neighborhood drone Derufidurono has 22 straight bashos as a Jonnie. There are 10 koshos/kyujos in there, inc
o The human with the longest streak (again, with banzuke-gais) is BS charter member Maeden (Unaff.). He’s got 18 bashos in jd (7 absences). Maeden also holds the currently longest consecutive jd appearances at 8.
o Sarunojima (Sakura), now banzuke-gai) holds the all-time longest jd streak at 29 bashos. Sarunojima has never been in another division.
· The most trips to Jonidan is 6 (not counting mae-zumo entries). Ouchiyama (Unaff) returned to Jonidan last basho to make it 7 times for the U. 7 times in the division is the all-time record!
· Longest ever to get to Jonidan? Of course, that takes a start above jd. The all-time record is owned by vice-Rijicho Nekonishiki (SFI), who finally reached visited all divisions in his 58th banzuke appearance in Natsu 09.
· If any of you Jonnies (or newbies) want to join an ichimon, please forward your request drop by here for some pertinent info.
· There were no promotions from Jonokuchi – again.
· The best career win-loss record among current Jonidaners is held by Izzie Fuehika. This young turk has 4 bashos for a 35-25 (0.583), which is good for BS’s 10th best. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen Fuehika around for 2 bashos. Maybe this time.
o Only 6 of the 27 BSers in Jonidan (22.2%) have career winning records. C’mon, jders! Much more keiko!
o The low career win-loss record among current Jonnies is 0.333 (by a Unaff). That is the low mark in Bench Sumo.L
· See the following Individual points. You can figure it out… ;-)
o Total individual ICF points when bonus points are added to the totals
o average ICF points per basho
o average ICF points with bonus
· Just 7 ichimoners have competed in all 33 ICF contests.J 4 Polers, 2 Forumers, and 1 Massashigawan make up that elite group (we get special luggage tags). J
· The “backwards shikona of the basho” ™ (chosen randomly by a highly sophisticated random number generator that involves a blindfold and an index finger) is returning SFIer Leonishiki? Leonishiki spelled backwards is, of course, “Iki-hsin-oel”, or is that, “Icky Shin Oil”. I believe former-Dejima may have used some of that stuff on his bum leg. J
· The letter of the banzuke is “W”. Of course, there was that retired BS’er with that shikona… We’re not talking about him, though. Only 14 shikonas even contain the letter, and just Stowawayhas it more than once. The letter “w” appears 15 times in our banzuke. That’s a “w” in just 8.9% of shikonas. When you realize that “w” is just 19 of the 1572 letters found in our banzuke (1.0%), you see that “w” is a rare gem. Oh, remember when we had Wakanohana, Wakanosato, Wakatosho, Wakashoryu onteh banzuke. Then, you couldn’t swing a bag of empty Calpis cans without hitting a “w”. Sigh…
· The longest shikona in BS remains KKSM’s: Kaiopectate, the Killer Sock Monkey. The longest non-monkey shikona is DeSuGian ilovetochinosh(in). Unaff Screaming Hipp(y) has 15, and is the next highest
o The BS automaton only lets 14 characters into the system. Four BSers have that number: Uiriikenshoryu (Sakura), Slartibartfass (Unaff), SarahPalinYama (Unaff), Hidariashiyama (Massashigawa)
· The shortest shikona is a toss-up between U Aome Yoma, Forumer Taka, U Bill & (often overlooked) Nabi. You’d think there’d be a 3-lettered shikona out there…
· You need to go down 85.5 shikonas before you’ll be halfway through the banzuke alphabet-wise for all BSers. That places you in the split between Kofuji (SFI) and Konosato (ISI).
o If you’re looking for the middle-ranker, 85 spots down is ms4w Yangnomazuma (SFI) & ms5e Fatakiyama (ISI). What is it with the Forumers and Izzies splitting things?
· SFIer aderechelseamaru is the first BSer, alphabetically. Last on the banzuke is still Zichi (ISI.).
